White sangria with melon, oranges and rum
( Sangria Bianca v.1 )

Our original home cooking

I created this white sangria for a get-together in summer. Actually I invented two kinds of sangria for that occasion. This melon and orange version in which the liquor is rum and a second sangria with nectarines and oranges where I used vodka instead of rum. I used white wine for both versions. My friends really enjoyed these sangrias. I find that a good sangria can accompany cold meals, buffet-style in summer, perfectly. In particular I like white sangria very much. Recipe for sangria with white wine, melon and oranges

Preparation

  • - Remove peel and all seeds from melon and cut its flesh into pieces.
  • - Put these pieces into a large carafe and add sugar and rum.
  • - Stir very well and let your mixture rest in a cool place, about 2 hours.
  • - At this point add orange and lemon slices and pour in white wine.
  • - Stir well and preserve in the refrigerator, at least 12 hours.

Just before serving

  • - Somebody says sangria should be served after filtering without fruit pieces but my husband and I like to serve it with all its fruit because it is beautiful to see and some guests wish to taste fruit pieces too.

Note

Tips

  • - You should prepare this sangria the day before.
  • - Made exactly like I have just explained, this sangria is alcoholic. I suggest you to put bottles of tonic water available to your guests to dilute it, if desired.
  • - Choose a dry white wine, not too aromatic. The flavor should derive from the fruit.
  • - This is one of the few cases where I don't follow my rule of using always seasonal produce. Melon and oranges are not available at the same time even if we can find all we need easily, thanks to globalization.

Menu planning

  • - As I previously wrote this white sangria is perfect for your summer invitations. Serve it in a meal, buffet-style or at a seated dinner to pair elaborated fish or meat dishes.
  • - The doses I suggest are enough for 4-6 people if there are other drinks.

Healthy eating

  • - The nutritional facts of sangria per serving do not consider all fruit used, that should only flavor your drink.
It is obvious that if you eat fruit too, these values change completely.
  • - I also wish you consider the importance of drinking alcohol moderately. Just look at sangria calories.
Its portion is slightly greater than the one suggested for wine: 125 ml but its calories are higher (a glass of wine - 100ml - has 80 to 90 calories), thanks to the added liquor and sugar.
So do not abuse it. Drinking in moderation is a good rule for us adults. Minors are not included, they should not drink.
